I’ll Have Another

What a great race today!  The thoroughbred “I’ll Have Another” won the 2012 Kentucky Derby with a time of 2:01.83.  I’ll Have Another is a chestnut horse sired by the Travers Stakes winner Flower Alley. In September 2010, I’ll Have Another was sent to the Keeneland sales where he was bought for $11,000 by Victor M. Davila. He was bought as a two-year-old by J. Paul Reddam for $35,000 at the Ocala Breeder’s sale. The colt’s distinctive name was inspired by Reddam’s reply when his “wife asks him if he wants more of her fresh-baked cookies.”

We hope you won some money today. Here is a great story from the Las Vegas Sun about Lucky’s Race and Sports Book getting crushed by printing 200 to 1 odds back in February.

Free Salmon

Our friends at The Cleanest Line are reporting on the demise of two dams on the Elwha River in Washington State. Currently the largest dam removal project on the continent, the demolition of the 108-foot Elwha Dam and the 210-foot Glines Canyon Dam will allow five species of Pacific salmon – including a super strain of Chinook salmon topping 100 pounds – to access more than 70 miles of previously unavailable waterways. Salmon currently spawn in five miles of river below the Elwha Dam, which provides no fish passage.

Dam busting is a hot commodity on both the left and right coasts of North America. On December 17, 2010, the Penobscot River Restoration Trust – a joint venture between American Rivers, the Atlantic Salmon Federation, Maine Audubon, the Natural Resources Council of Maine, the Nature Conservancy, the Penobscot Indian Nation, and Trout Unlimited – purchased the Veazie, Howland and Great Works Dams on the Penobscot River in Maine at a cost of 25 million dollars. Phase Two of the Penobscot River Restoration Project begins with the removal of the Great Works Dam in 2012 and the removal of the Veazie Dam over a two-year period beginning in 2013. Construction of a fish bypass at Howland Dam runs concurrently with dam removal. The estimated cost to implement this phase of the project is 30 million dollars.

Happy St. Patty’s Day

Posted in Events, Holiday, Holidays, St. Patrick's Day, Uncategorized | Comments Off

Happy Birthday to us!

It’s been a wild first year, but here we are.  We’ve spent the last 12 month traveling the United States, attending trade shows, meeting customers and making new friends who care as much about Salmon Cove and living the “against the current” way of life as we do.  We may be a little biased, but we’d like to think we have the greatest job.

One of the biggest perks of being a part of the Salmon Cove team is interacting with passionate people on a daily basis.  We’ve been happy to share our story and explain what the “against the current” way of life means to us, but we’ve enjoyed hearing YOUR stories even more.  Without the support and “against the current” thinking of our customers, colleagues, family, friends and acquaintances, we would not have enjoyed such a successful first year, and for that, we’re incredibly grateful.

As we move past our first year milestone, we hope to provide you with more opportunities to swim against the current, whether that takes the form of new products or shared stories.  You’ve all helped us immensely, and we want to return the favor and continue to help you enjoy the journey regardless of the current you’re swimming against.

Things We Love

Twin Anchors

Located in an historic Old Town building that dates back to 1881, Twin Anchors Restaurant & Tavern is one of the oldest restaurants in the city of Chicago. Since its founding in 1932, Twin Anchors has always been known for great, tender, barbecued baby-back ribs that can be enjoyed in a quaint neighborhood tavern.  Research shows that as far back as 1910, there was a tavern operating in this spot. Sometime during World War I, the Schlitz Brewing Company donated the bar that remains in use to this day. Notoriously, during Prohibition a speakeasy known as “Tante Lee Soft Drinks” provided refreshments for the “thirsty” in this location. The Walters family, along with Captain Herb Eldean, were the original operators of the Twin Anchors, and provided the barbecued ribs recipe and nautical name, respectively.

hmmmmm hmmmm

Sometime in the early 1950’s, Frank Sinatra made his first visit to Twin Anchors. Over the decades, Frank continued to make Twin Anchors one of his favorite stops, and the tales abound. One visit in the 70’s was described this way: “Sinatra entertained a large group of friends at the rib joint Twin Anchors last night. The guest list included Jilly Rizzo, football great Sid Luckman, Frank’s girlfriend Barbara Marx, comedian Pat Henry, composer Don Costa, pal Joey Bishop and agent Mickey Houston. Frank’s order was ‘Ribs, and keep ‘em coming!’ As usual, one of Mr. Sinatra’s bodyguards was posted at the pay phone preventing patrons from making calls that would cause a mob scene. Sinatra was very gracious about signing autographs, and was extremely generous with tipping everyone working his table $100 each.”

Ol' Blue Eyes

Twin Anchors has been featured in the filming of two major motion pictures. The 1999 film, “Return to Me”, directed by long time friend and customer Bonnie Hunt, exposed many new customers to the charm of this small corner restaurant which seems timeless. In 2008, The Dark Knight featured a scene in which Harvey Dent, a.k.a. Two Face, makes an appearance and has a conversation that ends badly for a corrupt detective. Twin Anchors was privileged to host Conan O’Brien on several occasions, and we were thrilled that he named us one of his 10 “Must Haves” in Entertainment Weekly.

Twin Anchors is located at 1655 N. Sedgwick Street in Chicago.

Some history on St. Patrick…..

Little is known of Patrick’s early life, though it is known that he was born in Roman Britain in the 4th century, into a wealthy Romano-British family. His father and grandfather were deacons in the Church. At the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken captive to Ireland as a slave.  It is believed he was held somewhere on the west coast of Ireland, possibly Mayo, but the exact location is unknown. According to his Confession, he was told by God in a dream to flee from captivity to the coast, where he would board a ship and return to Britain. Upon returning, he quickly joined the Church in Auxerre in Gaul and studied to be a priest.

In 432, he again said that he was called back to Ireland, though as a bishop, to Christianise the Irish from their native polytheism. Irish folklore tells that one of his teaching methods included using the shamrock to explain the Christian doctrine of the Trinity to the Irish people. After nearly thirty years of evangelism, he died on 17 March 461, and according to tradition, was buried at Downpatrick. Although there were other more successful missions to Ireland from Rome, Patrick endured as the principal champion of Irish Christianity and is held in esteem in the Roman Catholicism in Ireland|Irish Church.

And the wearing of green…..

Originally, the color associated with Saint Patrick was blue. Over the years the color green and its association with Saint Patrick’s day grew.  Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick’s Day as early as the 17th century.  Saint Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day. In the 1798 rebellion, to make a political statement, Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on 17 March in hopes of catching public attention.  The phrase “the wearing of the green”, meaning to wear a shamrock on one’s clothing, derives from a song of the same name.
